The Sweet Story of Our Bees: From Hive to Gummy Delights
From its sweet and earthy taste, to its many health benefits, I am not sure I have met too many people that don’t love honey, or are at least not fascinated by how it is made! The fact that a bee colony is one of the most fascinating hierarchies in the insect world, makes a deep dive to learn more about these amazing insects worthwhile!
Beekeeping in our house started over a decade ago and has consisted of long days processing honey, hot days inspecting hives, scavenger hunts looking for the queen, and a few funny bee sting stories—well they make us laugh now!
When we worked to create the perfect gummy recipe, it seemed only natural to use the honey from our bees, making this tasty treat even more special to us.
Since our bees and honey hold a special place in my heart, I am so excited to share with you a little more about bees, how they help our environment, and how a little bit of honey can actually have a positive impact on your body.
Let’s Talk About the Bees
Bee colonies are created in a very hierarchical structure that one might say is fascinating and even archaic. Each bee has a specific role based upon their age and caste (yes, I said caste!!! It kind of reminds me of 10th grade history!) which efficiently divides the labor in order to keep the colony alive, safe, and fed! In order for the colony to survive and reproduce, they MUST work together. Hmmm… it sounds like maybe bees have it all figured out.
But I digress, let’s focus on the hive. Each bee has a specific job and the worker bees have different roles throughout their short life to help keep the hive alive and prospering. The bees work to create the perfect hexagon honeycomb to store honey, pollen, and eggs. Some other jobs include: cleaning the hive, feeding the queen, guarding and protecting the hive, and collecting pollen, nectar, and water.
Those are some busy bees and this is just the tip of the iceberg on how a bee hive works to create the honey that we love so much!
What’s So Special About Honey?
First, honey has antioxidants to protect your cells, it is anti-inflammatory to help your body heal itself naturally, antiviral and antibacterial meaning it may help fight infections, and may also help reduce cholesterol, heal wounds, and reduce a sore throat. All of this AND it tastes good—God did not make a mistake here!
And not only is it good for you, but bees are good for the environment, too! Bees are pollinators and some studies say they pollinate up to 80% of the food we eat! And because they are such awesome and efficient pollinators, they also help to maintain biodiversity, support the growth of plants and trees, and support food webs—giving other animals food to eat!
